Northern Ireland Quarterly Construction Enquiry

Methodology

The Quarterly Construction Enquiry takes a sample of Northern Ireland construction firms from the Inter Departmental Business Register (IDBR). These firms are stratified by turnover. The largest of these firms are not sampled but are instead subject to a census.

Around 700 firms each year are included in the QCE sample. Each firm is sent a form which includes detailed explanatory notes on how to complete the form. This short questionnaire records the output of each firm in the relevant quarter.

All data received is recorded and rigorously checked.

The data is brought together and is subject to a series of further checks.

To produce the Index of Construction (IOC) we deflate the data to 2005 prices.

The deflated data is then seasonally adjusted. This removes the seasonal aspects of construction work and gives a better picture of what has occurred over the quarter.

The Northern Ireland Construction Bulletin is released in accordance with National Statistics guidelines as set out in Code of Practice.
