Northern Ireland Quarterly Construction Enquiry

The table below shows the breakdown of construction output present in the Northern Ireland Construction Bulletin.


A small group of relevant persons are granted pre-release access in accordance with Official Statistics Code of Practice. Currently this group includes:

Definitions

Construction output that the survey measures include:

  • General construction and demolition work (including public sector direct labour organizations)
  • Construction and repair of buildings (including bricklaying; maintenance; restoration; roofing)
  • Civil engineering (including roads; reservoirs; laying of pipe-lines, sewers, gas and water mains and electricity cables; aerial towers; electricity and gas installations; sports grounds)
  • Installation of fixtures and fittings(including gas; plumbing; electrical including alarms)
  • Building completion work (including painting and decorating; glazing; plastering; tiling; on-site joinery and carpentry; flooring; installation of fireplaces etc.)

The survey aims to provide an estimate of value of construction output in Northern Ireland based on activity associated with:

Housing:
Both Public and Private

Infrastructure:
Roads / Bridges/Car Parks/Footpaths
Water / Sewerage
Electricity (power stations and distribution networks, for example, lines and transformers, etc)
Gas (Gas storage and distribution facilities, pipelines and gasometers, etc)
Communications (television, telephone and radio masts, exchanges, cables and conduits, etc)
Air Transport (Airports, air traffic control facilities, radar installations, etc)
Railways
Harbours
Waterways

Industrial:
Factories
Warehouses
Oil, Steel and Coal

Non-industrial:
Schools / Colleges/Universities
Hospitals/Health Centres
Offices/ Banks
Shops/Garages
Hotels
Clubs/Cinemas/Other Entertainments
Churches
Agriculture
Miscellaneous

New Construction

  • All construction work on new housing and non-housing structures and roads.
  • Improvements, Alterations, Extensions to non-housing structures and roads.
  • Demolition and site preparation.

Repair and Maintenance and Housing Improvements:

  • Any repairs, maintenance, improvements, house/flat conversions, extensions, alterations and redecoration etc to existing housing.
  • Any repairs, maintenance or redecoration on existing non-housing buildings or structures.
