. The survey includes both adults and children in households and in communal establishments such as residential homes and long stay wards. The last time that a similar survey was conducted in was in 1989. Fieldwork for adults and children living in private households was carried out throughout 2006 and was completed in early 2007.
The surveys aim is to provide information on the prevalence of disability and health limitations amongst adults and children as well as information on their experiences and circumstances. The development of the survey has benefited from the input of the Promoting Social Inclusion Working Group (PSIWG) on People with Disabilities. This group includes representatives from government departments, the disability sector and the Equality Commission.
The information collected in the survey will be used by a number of Northern Ireland Departments, as well as interested voluntary and community organisations, and will help Government identify the needs of people with disabilities, the services they rely on and importantly, where there are gaps in service provision or barriers to accessing services.
