What
is the International Survey of Adult Skills?
This survey has been designed to find out what activities adults do
in their daily lives, such as reading, finding information, using
computers and technology, and to learn about their experiences pf
education and work.
The study will provide valuable information to policymakers on the
current skills and experiences of Northern Ireland's adults. The
results of this survey will be used to inform government departments
when developing programmes for training in essential skills.
This study is taking place around the world (including in America,
Europe and Japan) to provide an international comparison of people's
experiences of education and education.
This study has been commissioned by a consortium of government
departments who have assigned a team of research organisations, led by
the National Foundation for Educational Research (NFER) to carry out
the study.
Your interview will be carried out by the Northern Ireland Statistics
and Research Agency (NISRA).
How was I
chosen?
The Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency selects addresses
at random from a list containing all addresses in Northern Ireland,
which is held by the Land and Property Services.
We need to talk to one person (aged 16-65) at each address. An
interviewer will select this person at random when he or she arrives at
your door.
ISAS covers those aged 16 to 65 to focus on the working age population
– this is the standard international age range which we use in
order to be able to compare results with other countries.
Why should I
take part?
Everyone's experiences are different, so it is important that as many
people as possible take part, regardless of personal circumstances.
Everybody’s answers are very important to us, whether or not you
are currently employed.
We will give a high street voucher to the person who takes part in the
study, as a thank you for their time.
What happens
next?
An interviewer will come to your home to conduct the survey. The
interviewer will show an official identification card and explain the
survey in more detail to you.
The first part is a questionnaire that asks about your education, work
experiences, use of technology and other information.
The remaining time is spent completing activities that you may do in
everyday life. These might include following instructions on a
prescription label, reading a flight schedule at the airport, using a
map to give directions to someone, or determining the expiration date
on a food product.
How do I know
my answers will be kept confidential?
Everything you tell us is treated in confidence. The results will
not be used in any way in which they can be associated with you or your
address.
Any information given to an interviewer is strictly confidential and
the survey team will not release any identifiable information about you
or your household to any government department, or anyone else.
